CLOVERFIELD 4 Might Already Be Completed

J.J. Abrams is all about keeping things mysterious. Why don’t you just tell us stuff, J.J.? We’ll still be excited if things are expected. Anyway, Abrams is so mysterious, there’s a pretty good chance the fourth Cloverfield movie is already shot and in the can, before the third one has even come out. Cloverfield 3 (which surely won’t be called that) was once called God Particle, a movie people knew about long before it became a Cloverfield movie. Now, ScreenRant has the case that another Abrams-produced movie has the chance to be another Cloverfield. Mysteries, man!

So, God Particle was the name given to a project by Abrams and producer Lindsey Weber through Bad Robot and Paramount (though Netflix might become a player) and will follow the crew of a space station after their experimentation sees Earth disappear and them stranded in space. This sounded like a cool idea, but closer to the original proposed release date, it was announced that it was actually the next film in the now-existent Cloverfield franchise, following the sudden appearance and success of 2016’s 10 Cloverfield Lane.

We also know that Abrams/Paramount have promised more Cloverfield movies that will follow the format of being unrelated narratively but are riffs on sci-fi and horror subgenres. That brings us to the case of a movie called Overlord, a film slated to come out this October, directed by Julius Avery (Son of a Gun). It’s about American soldiers during WWII who discover Hitler has a plot to stop the D-Day attack using supernatural and occult means. It sounds exactly up my personal alley, but it also sounds weird enough to fall under the Cloverfield banner, but it’s also produced by Abrams and Weber with Bad Robot. And the movie’s already done!

It’s entirely possible we’ll get two Cloverfield movies this year, and that they both seem like totally bonkers takes on their specific subject matters. Abrams is a huge fan of The Twilight Zone, and maybe he’ll make an anthology movie series work, the way John Carpenter’s original intent for Halloween couldn’t.

At any rate, I’m excited for both God Particle and Overlord, even if they’re not Cloverfield movies. So, yeah, just call them something and release them, J.J.!
