We haven’t had one of these since March, but I’m now very happy to state that this Saturday, June 29th, at 2pm, there will again be a Classic Doctor Who screening at the Nerdist Showroom at Meltdown Comics in Los Angeles.
This month, we’ll be screening one of the best (and arguably THE best) stories in the entirety of the series, 1984’s “The Caves of Androzani,” which was Fifth Doctor Peter Davison’s finest hour as he attempts to save his new companion Peri (Nicola Bryant) from a slow death by Spectrox toxemia. It’s a real bad thing. Along the way, there’s intrigue among drugs smugglers, corrupt politicians, and petty military types, plus a creepy guy in a mask. What fun!
As always, the screenings are 100% FREE, and we’ll be doing trivia contests and prize-giveaways in between the episodes. I am seriously going to put myself in the minority here, but I’ve NEVER understood why people like Caves Of Androzani so much. It’s a story where the Doctor gets thrown into a situation that is none of his making, his presence makes no change whatsoever in the outcome, and the only thing that happens is he is forced to regenerate, and ultimately it’s for no good reason. Yes, he gave his cure to the toxin to Peri, but their presence in the story was entirely and utterly irrelevant which is why I hate this episode so much.
My podcasting co-host for Fusion Patrol also hates this episode, and one of my best friends in the UK also things poorly of it, although my UK mate does agree that he’s in the minority there as most Brits seem to love that story, while most Americans don’t…
There are quite a few Davison stories that I think are amazing… This just isn’t one of them.
