Everybody in the superhero movie world has been clamoring for months for the May 6 opening of Captain America: Civil War, devoting a lot of energy into choosing which side they’ll be supporting. But in the comics world, there’s an even bigger war about to happen that will have even greater ramifications. For the past few weeks, Marvel has been unveiling teaser images for its much anticipated Civil War II event series, written by Brian Michael Bendis. The story will pit Carol Danvers against Tony Stark, forcing all of the other heroes will to pick a side once again. Apparently, Iron Man just can’t get along with people named “Captain,” huh?
Like the American Civil War in the 1860s, which saw friend turn against friend and brother take up arms against brother, so too does it appear that once-firm allies will be at odds during this second conflict of superheroes. Real talk for a second? Tony is now responsible for two massive civil wars, so maybe they ought to remove him from the equation going forward… the guy’s kind of a war profiteer.
Below are the two new teasers, with art by Jim Cheung:
On Captain Marvel’s side, we’ve got Spectrum, She-Hulk, Ant-Man, Winter Soldier, Hawkeye, Blue Marvel, Medusa, Captain America (Steve Rogers), Vision, War Machine, and Spider-Man.
And on Iron Man’s team, we’ve got Black Widow, Deadpool, Captain America (Sam Wilson), Hulk, Hercules, Black Panther, Luke Cage, Thor, Miss America, Star-Lord, and Daredevil.
Sam Wilson fighting Steve Rogers? Rhodey finally thinking Tony’s not right about something? Hulk siding against She-Hulk?!?! And we thought Black Widow and Hawkeye being on opposite teams in the movie was going to be rough. Of course, they’re on opposite teams here, too, so…
The crux of the series will be on whether the heroes should take the chance to stop crimes before they happen if given the opportunity (thanks to some fancy new technology). Captain Marvel thinks they should, while Iron Man thinks they shouldn’t, as embodied in their respective slogans of “Change the Future” and “Protect the Future.”
Jean Grey, who featured in one of the big teasers for the series, does not feature in either portrait, nor do any of the X-Men. Allegiances tend to swap a few times during these events, so maybe they just haven’t chosen a side yet.
