CineFix’s 8-Bit Cinema Does GODZILLA [Spoilers]

If you haven’t watched Godzilla yet, consider the video below to be a massive succession of spoilers.

I feel like the greatest compliment I can give CineFix’s 8-bit take on this summer’s Godzilla is that this looks like a game I’d want to play. From the swap between a sidescroller and monster brawler, to the reproduction of the film’s score, I could see myself spending a good hour or so engaging in some monster (and human mayhem). I almost wish there was a Rampage segment thrown in for good measure.

One of the clearest points of inspiration for the “gameplay” in the Godzilla vs. MUTOs sequence is the SNK 32-Bit classic, War of the Monsters. While the 1991 release was much too powerful to make its way onto the NES, an altered port was released on the Super Nintendo and Genesis by Takara.

And if we’re going to take a stroll down kaiju game memory lane, let’s not forget Incognito’s excellent and in need of a sequel War of the Monsters from 2003 (2004 here in the U.S.). Visually impressive, like King of the Monsters, War had a decent-sized roster of robots, giant lizards, and killer beasts to thrash and throw around the city.

The video’s gotten me thinking: what would we want out of a modern Godzilla game? Would people prefer a free-for-all style brawler like the two classic games described above (and holding to pattern of Godzilla games that have been released in the past)? Or maybe some kind of Evolve-style humans on kaiju game is in order in this day and age.
