Scottish electronic trio CHVRCHES are turning heads right now, and rightly so. Their second album, Every Open Eye, was released less than two weeks ago, and Friday night saw them strut their stuff as the musical guest on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. They performed their single, “Leave a Trace”, and Lauren Mayberry gave a characteristically passionate and tender performance–not one to miss. But in case you did, we’ve got the goods right here.

This song packs a good punch, perhaps talking about a relationship that’s too far gone to salvage–and most of us can relate to some version of that. The lyric, “I will show restraint, just like we said we should / you think I’ll apologize for things I left behind, but you got it wrong / and I’m as sane as I ever was,” implies guilt and regret, but also a certainty that the decision is final, and that sense of finality is what gives the song it’s weight. Mayberry sings each word with such authentic gravity that I’m on truly board with the character in the story, and I’d like to know more of what went down.
