Christmas In Nerdland: Santa Sells Razors

What one thing meant Christmas to you more than anything else when you were a kid?

For me, it was this:

Yes, if you’re of a certain age, you remember Santa riding a Norelco electric razor — Noelco! — in a stop motion commercial that ran for many years. A later version, from 1981:

And much later, in a 1994 update playing on the nostalgia of people like me:

Christmas, for me, was a sea of bad TV specials, “very special episodes,” and TV commercials, because a) we didn’t celebrate the holiday, being of another faith, and b) I watched a LOT of television as a kid. A LOT. And most of what I remember is the most ephemeral stuff, like the commercials.

Take this one, for the Atari 2600 E.T. game, with E.T. in a Santa suit:

Or this heartwarming ode to the holiday and its true meaning, buying toys, from the Center of the Known Universe, Toys R Us (“Now open in Yonkers!”):

And, of course, a version of a popular Coca-Cola anthem with a visual cue for Christmas:

You have your traditions, I have mine.

And with that, on behalf of the entire Nerdist team, may your Christmas be a truly happy one.

Soap on a Rope for the old man..boy dads really get crap gifts when you are little and the smell of new plastic (from all the barbie shit) also bring back fond xmas memories

  2. I must be slightly younger than you Perry. For me, it’s probably the Coke Polar Bears and The California Raisins doing Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer , but I get the sentiment.

    Merry Christmas
