Chris Hemsworth Wants More Laughs In THOR: RAGNAROK

The title Thor: Ragnarok carries the promise of dark times ahead for the title character and his fellow Asgardians. Ragnarok is an apocalyptic event in Norse mythology, and the script for Thor: Ragnarok is said to be one of the darkest stories for a Marvel movie yet. Chris Hemsworth will be back for his fifth appearance as Thor, and he has a very specific hope for the third Thor film.

“I think [Thor: Ragnarok] needs to be injected with that sort of smart wit and unexpected kind of humor, kind of what James Gunn came in and did with [Guardians of the Galaxy],” Hemsworth told CinemaBlend. “It was like off center and unpredictable, and I think we can definitely use a dose of that, you know?”

The Thor movie franchise has already embraced humor in the first two movies, which had more comedic elements than the source material. But apparently Hemsworth felt that the second movie, Thor: The Dark World, didn’t have enough jokes to recapture the charm of the first film.

“I feel we had less of the sort of the naivety or fun or humor that the first [Thor] might have had,” related Hemsworth. “I wish we had more of that in the second [movie]. … We’ve done regal. We’ve done Shakespeare, and we’ve shown that. I think now it’s time to go, ‘Okay, cool. Let’s try something different,’ and [director] Taika [Waititi] just had such a brilliant sort of take and funny kind of ideas about where we could [go], how we could do that.”

If anything, Thor: The Dark World tried a little too hard to be funny. Remember Darcy’s second “meow meow” moment? But Thor: Ragnarok already has the perfect setup for a buddy comedy, with Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk joining Thor for this adventure. The sucker punch that Hulk threw at Thor in The Avengers was the second funniest moment in that film…right after the epic thrashing that Hulk gave Loki. Just the idea of a full-length team up of Hulk and Thor suggests a lot of comedic potential that could be mined in the third film.

Thor: Ragnarok will be released on November 3, 2017.
