Last nightâs installment of The X-Files ended with a cliffhanger (you can read our recap here) that left the fate of its two lead agents and the entire human race up in the air before bringing the six-episode miniseries to a grim conclusion. But according to series creator Chris Carter, The X-Files wonât disappear for another 13-year hiatus.
âI can tell you, almost without a doubt, we will come back,â said Carter during an interview with The New York Times. âI donât know how or when â Fox owns the show. But because the ratings were what they were, I think the show will come back one way or the other…Itâs complicated. Itâs really a matter of when the actors would be able to do it, when theyâre available at the same time. Weâd also need a schedule that would give us enough lead time to make it interesting. Nothingâs been written yet. Iâve written down a lot of ideas but thereâs nothing even close to a script.â
Carter also indicated that the maddening cliffhanger was designed to ensure that fans demanded more X-Files.
âWeâve always ended with a cliffhanger,â noted Carter. âThis isnât a movie; itâs a TV series. Any resolution would have to lead to more stories to tell. If they feel cheated, theyâre not familiar with how weâve done the show. I think theyâd feel more cheated if we resolved it and didnât come back at all.â
If and when The X-Files returns, itâs not clear how many episodes it would run or if it would retain the mix of monster-of-the-week and mythology stories that led to some divisive responses from fans in the current batch of episodes.
