What the First Look At the New SABRINA Means!

Two decades ago, Archie Comics’ Sabrina the Teenage Witch was a fixture on TGIF and a fairly safe adaptation of the comic that spawned it. Later this year, Netflix is going in a much darker direction with The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, which is based upon the constantly delayed comic with the same name. With the premiere coming up in October, Netflix has dropped the first official pictures of the series. Today’s Nerdist News is pouring over the details to explain what they mean for Sabrina’s latest incarnation.

Join guest host Amy “The Good Witch” Vorpahl as she takes us into the town of Greendale for some dark magic. The first picture features Kiernan Shipka as Sabrina while rocking a look that practically screams Little Red Riding Hood. But we don’t think Sabrina is out there to find a good werewolf. She has a ceremonial bell in her hand, which we believe to be tied to her dark baptism. Perhaps Sabrina is supposed to ring the bell and announce her arrival.

Which brings us to the second picture, which is definitely Sabrina’s dark baptism. Sabrina’s aunts, Hilda and Zelda, are right behind her as she undergoes the pagan ritual. There’s also a creepy guy in a mask on the far right. In the comics, this is where Satan appeared to Sabrina as a giant goat man. It’s also worth noting the clothing worn in these two photos doesn’t appear to be specific to any particular era. We expect Chilling Adventures of Sabrina will be set in the present, but there may be a timeless quality to it as well.
