Adult Swim announced today that they have given the greenlight to a seventh season of the hilarious medical-drama spoof Children’s Hospital. Created initially as a web series by Rob Corddry and finding near-instant success online, the show pokes fun at previous successful medical dramas such as ER and Grey’s Anatomy, focusing more on the sexual trials and tribulations of its doctors than all those pesky sick children lying around, getting in their way.
The initial web series brought a powerhouse of actors along, including Lake Bell, Ken Marino, Rob Huebel, Erinn Hayes, and Megan Mullally. Henry Winkler and Malin Akerman later joined the series during its second season on Adult Swim. Since then, Children’s Hospital has won two Primetime Emmys for Outstanding Short-form Live Action Television, and even led to two other loosely related shows, NTSF:SD:SUV and Eagleheart after featuring them as faux commercials during their episodes.
Children’s Hospital has parodied just about every medical drama to date, even doing a “live” season finale as a jab at ER. Upping the ante even further, the show frequently plays with meta-humor: like that one time Corddry and the rest of the cast took on personas of actors cast to play the characters of Children’s Hospital. (See? They weren’t kidding around on the meta-front.)
âI’m happy. After our season six cliffhanger, people will be dying for us to turn our backs on the notion of series continuity even more,â said Corddry in a press release. Here’s to hoping that is exactly what they do.
