Childish Gambino Covers R&B Classic ‘So Into You’ By Tamia

Wait, is there anything Donald Glover aka Childish Gambino can’t do? This guy is a multi-talented rapper, singer, actor, writer, comedian… he’s been nominated for two Grammy awards, and even wrote some episodes of 30 Rock. And now, for triple j’s “Like A Version” series, he’s covered the seductive R&B classic “So Into You” by Canadian singer Tamia.

“So Into You” is a song off Tamia’s self-titled album all the way back from 1998. Glover keeps his version close to the original, and it feels especially vulnerable as Glover pushes into the far reaches of his range. I must confess that the clicks of his fingers made me want to click along, too. At the beginning of the video he talks about the song being close to his heart, something he loved as a child. I think that passion and connection comes through in his performance, which is aided beautifully by his band.

As Childish Gambino, Glover has released two studio albums, two EP’s, and seven mixtapes. The last release was the mixtape, STN MTN / Kauai, which combined hip-hop with R&B. He’s currently hard at work on his third album, though there is currently no release date.

What do you think of Glover’s cover of “So Into You”? Does he do justice to the original? R&B lovers, unite with your comments below.
