Chewbacca Mom Gets a Sign Language Interpretation

When Chewbacca Mom Candace Payne’s mask video went viral, it was the wookiee roar heard around the world. It was hard to find someone who hadn’t seen or at least heard mention of the video.

So that everyone could truly experience that message of pure joy and Star Wars love, a woman named Amber Galloway Gallego took it upon herself to interpret Payne’s original video into sign language.

You wouldn’t think a RRAARRR would translate, but oh, it does. Gallego channels all of Payne’s honest to goodness happiness and somehow even outdoes her facial expressions.

Watching the videos side by side, you can’t help but smile. With every growl of the mask, Gallego’s interpretation gets more and more expressive. The belly laughs, the roars! It’s a full on performance that definitely conveys the pure glee of the original! Gallego even faux-stumbles over the word “confiscate.”

Coincidentally, Gallego and Candace Payne are both from Texas, which is also where Chewbacca actor Peter Mayhew currently resides. Are all the Chewie fans in the Lone Star State? They should rename Austin Kashyyyk at this point, don’t you think?

The Chewbacca mask video has become a global phenomenon, Payne’s original video is currently at 146 million views and is, inconceivably, still rising. Even if you didn’t find it quite as amusing as everyone else, you can’t deny how great it is that Star Wars love expressed by a happy Chewbacca has reached the entire galaxy, regardless of language barrier.

You can watch the full video on Amber Galloway Gallego’s facebook page.
