Chess Threesomes

When I was in elementary school I learned to play chess with a Flinstones board. Fred and Wilma were kings and queens, while Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm were the knights. This totally screwed me for “regular” chess, but I have fun childhood memories of using Dino to perform a checkmate.

I knew I played chess differently, but I’m not the only one. Apparently, there is a three player chess board that allows you to do just that. Have any of you nerds ever played chess for three? I usually like playing games one on one (Flintstones chess included), because it’s much easier to only give one person my competitive death stare.

What do you guys think of three player chess?

  1. A nerd with more than one friend. Well I guess if one of them makes their mom play. Team Geek.

  2. Nick Tomlin says:

Controlling the center four squares must be a bitch on 3 player.

Also, no BamBam, naughty boy, down boy, down!

  3. BamBam says:

Oh, I’ll checkmate you with a dino anytime 😉

  4. Imal de Apollo says:

Looks like something incredible… Can’t wait to try it.

  5. Sylvia says:

I used to play four-person chess, poorly, back in the day. But, I’ve never seen three-person chess. Only three-dimensional chess. Go Star Trek!

  6. TOC says:

This sort of reminds me of “3-Dimensional Chess” (both the Earth version and the Star Trck version.)

I spent about a decade playing “alternative” chess games of all sorts (often called “Fairy Chess”) … but those were almost always still 2-player games on standard boards with the number and type of pieces available to players being the only change (a practice that probably started out as a way to level the playing field for competitors of differing skill levels, like a handicap.) …all of this stuff is an interesting niche etc, but the serious players hate, HATE this sort of thing… Which is exactly why I’m working on building an online project that’ll play some of my favorite/weird alt. game creations.

  7. Hickspy says:

My friends and I have been playing 4-player chess for years.

  8. HoJoNaTion says:

Perhaps Big-C can get his buddy Wil to comment on the 3-D chess he played in his youth.

  9. Rich Conner says:

This is amazing, I definitely will need to purchase one.

  10. Louis O'Raga says:

I am greatly amused by this.

I’d just lure one player into the other, and force them to pit each other as I hum “Battle of the Fates” in the background.

    BWAHAHAHA

  11. Shaun William Callahan says:

Sheesh… I have a hard enough time trying to get one friend to sit down and play chess with me. I can’t imagine finding two…

But dammit I wanna try it! Looks awesome. I’m sure some one with more time than me will make a digital version of this.. 🙂

I’m still trying to find a someone with a multi level board from star trek. My dad played it once and said it nearly broke his brain haha.

  12. I always wanted to try that. Haven’t had the chance though.
I guess I would first have to find another person to play with since no one in my family and none of my friends know how to play O_o

  13. Chris says:

I use to play three way chess with some friends in high school. It really becomes quite different and challenging to keep track of all the lines of attack. Bishops and queens are bastards!

  14. Garrison C. says:

I really like the possibilities of switching alliances and betrayals it would take with two checkmates necessary in one game – without letting down your own guard.

It’s like Game of Thrones. (actually, I have no idea if that’s true – I couldn’t get through the first episode, and couldn’t commit to the books. I know…chop my head off.) Maybe, though, there’s a title inspiration. “Game of Squares” “Betrayal Chess?” (Threeway Chess sounds like exotic foreplay)

p.s. I remember the Flintstones chess pieces in my own elementary school classroom. I felt like the pieces were always grimy.

  15. Tim says:

On the show Big Bang Theory, Sheldon “invented” three person chess. You think he would have known it already existed.

Though he did it different…and invented two new chess pieces.

  16. Kim Gray says:

Really? Now I have to watch TWO people kick my butt?
