Check Out This Secret Movie Theater Entrance Modeled After the Door to the Mines of Moria

Speak, friend, and enter.

While entering a movie theater is a lot less treacherous than entering the Mines of Moria from the Lord of the Rings, this project is still incredible. Reddit user Eclipse_007 posted an imgur gallery earlier this morning revealing how he built an accurate, touch-activated secret entrance to his basement. This beats a secret book case door any day:

As seen in the gallery above, the creator built a frame and wove a string of LED lights side to side to serve as the illumination for the door. According to the post, he then purchased a plexiglass sheet and covered the front of it in black vinyl and painted the back of it white. After that, he got to work drawing out the design found in Tolkien’s famous books. If you’ve somehow been living under a rock and haven’t seen the original image this was modeled after, take a look:

Mines of Moria

After drawing the above design on the back of the plexiglass, the artist used a razor to cut it out. On the cutting process he joked, “I thought about trying to get the vinyl laser cut, but where is the fun in that?” The door bears two trees, a crown, seven stars, a hammer and anvil (the emblems of Durin blacksmiths), and a single star.

The most notable part of the door however, is the writing at the top which in English lettering reads, “Ennyn Durin Aran Moria. Pedo Mellon a Minno. Im Narvi hain echant. Celebrimbor o Eregion teithant i thiw hin.” This translates toThe Doors of Durin, Lord of Moria. Speak, friend, and enter. I, Narvi, made them. Celebrimbor of Hollin drew these signs.” After carving the letters, he installed the door at the foot of the stairs and framed it so it blended in with the paneling on the wall.

Although the mythos behind this door involves actually speaking the word friend, the door only opens by touch at the moment. However, after getting several questions about why the door doesn’t open the way it should, the creator responded, “Already have it in the works! I can get it to recognize my voice, but it has a hard time with everyone else’s. I’m working on that part and will hopefully have that installed soonish.” So, hopefully when he gets things sorted out, he’ll release a video showing how it all works.

So what do you think of this awesome feat? Let us know in the comments below.
