Check Out the New POWER RANGERS Costumes

The upcoming cinematic Power Rangers reboot is just under a year away, but the first glimpse of the new costumes for the “teenagers with attitude” has already arrived!

Entertainment Weekly has posted the first look at Becky G as the Yellow Ranger, Ludi Lin as the Black Ranger, Dacre Montgomery as the Red Ranger, Naomi Scott as the Pink Ranger, and RJ Cyler as the Blue Ranger. And while the helmets are vaguely similar to the classic designs, the rest of their costumes appear to be inspired by Iron Man.

For comparison’s sake, here’s what the original TV costumes looked like.

And this is what the Power Rangers wore in the very first Mighty Morphin Power Rangers film.

Power Rangers first movie

Power Rangers director Dean Israelite told EW that “the show was about kids coming of age, about metamorphosis. These suits needed to feel like they were catalyzed by these kids and their energy, their spirit.”

“It’s tricky finding a new language for a superhero costume,” added production designer Andrew Menzies. “Ours is an alien costume that grows on them, that’s not man-made. You can’t win everyone over, but we are trying to appeal to a more mature audience and gain new fans.”

The new Power Rangers are a departure from the spandex-wearing heroes of the original TV series, but at least they are still recognizable as the Rangers. The recently revealed revamp of Rita Repulsa (as played by Elizabeth Banks) doesn’t even resemble her television counterpart. But until we actually see footage from the Power Rangers movie, there’s no way to tell how these costumes will play on screen. We’re hoping for the best!

Power Rangers will hit theaters on March 24, 2017.
