While a visit to any big comic book convention offers proof of fandom’s undying love for steampunk, Hollywood has apparently still not gotten the message; its attempts at the genre frequently resulting in misfires like the film adaptations of Wild Wild West and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. So it’s heartening to hear a team of steampunk-loving filmmakers has taken it upon themselves to bring everything that’s great about it to the big screen, in the form of Archangel from the Winterâs End Chronicles. Archangel is an action-adventure saga set in the London of 1893, focusing on a masked vigilante who leads an underground resistance against a tyrannical world-dominating regime.
The project is currently a web series from writer-director Dave Di Pietro and producer Jeff Burdett, two episodes of which have been completed. A third, titled “Deadliest of the Species”, is now in development. Once it’s finished, Di Pietro and Burdett intend to take it to a studio to prove Archangel‘s viability as a theatrical film. That’s where fans come in. The filmmakers are running an Indiegogo Campaign in an attempt to fund “Deadliest of the Species”. They’ve already begun building sets, props, and costumes, as well as casting actors like The Walking Dead‘s Michael Koske (one of the AMC hit’s most frequent walker actors). And they’re offering perks and rewards that should please most every steampunk devotee who contributes to the campaign, including flip-up sunglasses, a Sherlock Holmes magnificator, a wrist monoculator, a secret decodex ring, an Archangel mask, and even a battle axe. Along with opportunities to become a producer or cast member.
