But, you know, if that food is edible, it seems like a waste of food for the sake of a cool slow-motion HD video. I’d rather they gave the food to a needy, hungry person and shot something else in slo-mo HD. But that’s just old unartistic me. Old, unartistic, hungry me. How far is IHOP from here?

I disagree with the “wasted food” sentiment. This food wasn’t wasted, it was used to create an awesome video.
It happens every day with Mentos and Coke videos, Car companies and the Mythbusters routinely destroy cars just for the sake of making edutaintional videos.
In February I made a video using a $30 bottle of wine and a $3 cup of coffee. I was chided for it, as one might expect from the internet. The wine and coffee were ruined, but ads on that video made $1500.
