Disney Insider released a new Maleficent trailer today, and it shows both a loyalty to the classic animated source material and an intriguing life of its own. Check it out:

Did anyone else get chills during the first scene where Maleficent casts her spell? Angelina Jolie has got the Maleficent voice down. We also catch a better look at the three good fairies and the king (Sharlto Copley) waging war against a winged(!) Maleficent. As with any fairytale reimagining, there is definitely more to this rivalry than meets the eye.

And then, of course, there are the wings. It turns out Maleficent is some sort of fairy… or at least, that’s what she claims to Aurora (Elle Fanning). The two seem to form a strange friendship along the way — a markedly different story than in Sleeping Beauty. So far Maleficent evokes imagery and tone similar to the visually stunning Snow White and the Huntsman. Here’s hoping this film’s young heroine is a bit stronger!
