Lock and load dudes, the fellas from our favorite ’80s retro-synth group, Gunship, have crafted an adrenaline-pumping, Danger Zone-entering playlist and illustration for our Car Tunes and Cartoons mix series, for which we ask our favorite musicians to draw and play guest DJ for us.
Ever since we debuted Gunship’s authentically ’80s-centric debut album, we’ve been a bit obsessed with the trio. And after we saw their latest music video for single “Tech Noir”, which references Rocky, Robocop, Terminator, and Friday The 13th to name a few, we knew we needed them to make us a mix of all the music that inspired them to write their own. Not only did they make a playlist full of unrelenting, cinematic jamsâsup, Jan Hammer and Vince DiColaâbut their illustration is a perfect visual representation of everything this band loves. Channeling cryogenically preserved, unaltered versions of VHS-era action movies, Gunship represent everything about our past that is worth saving. Check out their illustration and playlist below.
The band also perfectly summarized the energy of the mix when they explained it to us: “Juice the spirit from the 1980s; use that juice to fuel a Lamborghini Countach which is on fire, speeding through the late night, neon-lit city streets of post apocalyptic Miami in the year 2000 (the future) with John Carpenter at the wheel and you probably have a summary of this GUNSHIP playlist. Pedal to the metal.” Amen.
