The solo film starring Captain Marvel might have been pushed back on the release schedule yet again (UGH) by Marvel Studios, but fans of Carol Danvers have at least one piece of good news coming out of New York Comic-Con. The character is the latest member of the Marvel Universe to get her own Young Adult prose novel, this one being written by the husband-and-wife co-author team Shannon Hale and Dean Hale. As announced by Marvel CCO Joe Quesada this past weekend, Captain Marvel joins other characters who have already been adapted for the YA audience—including fellow female Avengers like She-Hulk and the Black Widow.
Discussing her new job and getting the chance to tell the adventures of Captain Marvel, Shannon Hale said (via her Tumblr), “Obviously we’re very excited and honored to be entrusted to tell a story with this beloved character; If you aren’t familiar yet with Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel, you will be!” For fans of female Marvel heroes and YA prose fiction, this wasn’t the only good news coming out of the con this weekend, as it was also announced that Black Widow is slated to get a second young adult novel written by Margaret Stohl, a follow-up to her first book Black Widow: Forever Red, which comes out this Tuesday, October 13th.
Captain Marvel has a unique place in the Marvel Universe. Originally created to be just another female version of a male hero—in this case cosmic superhero Captain Mar-Vell—she made her debut as Ms. Marvel in the late ’70s where she headlined her own title for quite some time, and became a mainstay of the Avengers as well. While her male counterpart was killed off in the early ’80s (and actually stayed dead), her popularity and importance to the overall Marvel Universe continued to grow, until eventually, she took the name Captain Marvel herself and eclipsed her male predecessor completely. She’ll also be the first female Marvel hero to get her own solo movie in March of 2019.
