Did CAPTAIN MARVEL’s Casting News Confirm Phase 4 Details?

Warning: There are potential spoilers ahead for Captain Marvel and beyond!

The long-awaited Captain Marvel movie is officially in production, and Marvel only made fans more excited by adding two characters who were killed off in previous films—plus a familiar face who was exiled to Marvel’s TV realm. While putting those players into the mix makes sense for Captain Marvel‘s ’90s storyline, they may also set the stage for Phase 4’s cosmic adventures. Today’s Nerdist News is taking you to the stars and paving the way for the Kree-Skrull War!

Join guest host, Amy “Phyla-Vell” Vorpahl, as she explains the comic book history of the Kree-Skrull War. Long before the age of comic events made crossovers less special, Roy Thomas, Neal Adams, and other artists crafted an arc that put the Avengers in the middle of a war between two alien empires. Ronan the Accuser played a big role in that tale, so it’s good to see Lee Pace back in the role. But perhaps more important than that? Ronan had an adversarial relationship with both Carol Danvers and her mentor, Mar-Vell, meaning he could also potentially play a big part in the incident that gives Carol her powers.

Presumably Djimon Hounsou‘s Korath the Pursuer will serve Ronan during this conflict, while Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) will share the screen with Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) for the first time since Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 1! Captain Marvel will likely depict the first time Fury and Coulson ever came into contact with aliens—although Coulson’s experience would have to be limited in order to maintain continuity with AoS. (Assuming Marvel still cares about keeping its story straight.)

This movie is also the first time the Skrulls have ever appeared in the MCU, although a recent Guardians of the Galaxy Easter Egg confirmed Marvel has planted these seeds for years. A lot of planning went into that, which is why we believe Captain Marvel will only scratch the surface of the Kree-Skrull War. It’s simply too much story for a single movie to contain, and it would give the Avengers plenty to deal with in Phase 4. It could even lead to a Secret Invasion adaptation down the line, which featured the Skrulls impersonating heroes and villains in a bid to take over the Earth.
