Ta-Nehisi Coates is Relaunching CAPTAIN AMERICA

The last time that Captain America launched a new volume, the first issue infamously ended with the words “Hail Hydra.” Secret Empire eventually brought the real Cap back, but now it’s time for one of Marvel’s greatest heroes to get a true “Fresh Start.” Comic book writer and journalist Ta-Nehisi Coates is writing the brand new Captain America #1, and it’s coming to comic book stores on the Fourth of July.

Coates made the announcement himself during an extended editorial for The Atlantic, adding that he will be joined by interior artist Leinil Yu and cover artist Alex Ross. Coates also revealed that his mixed feelings towards Cap’s devotion to the American dream fueled his desire to take on this book. “Writing is about questions for me—not answers. And Captain America, the embodiment of a kind of Lincolnesque optimism, poses a direct question for me: Why would anyone believe in The Dream?”

He continues, “What is exciting here is not some didactic act of putting my words in Captain America’s head, but attempting to put Captain America’s words in my head. What is exciting is the possibility of exploration, of avoiding the repetition of a voice I’ve tired of.”

One thing that we can probably infer is that Captain America’s stint in a near post-apocalyptic future storyline won’t extend past the current series with Mark Waid and Chris Samnee. Cap has a pretty rich tapestry of villains and supporting characters to draw from, but it’s worth noting that the newly released image from Marvel seems to feature heroes and villains from the Invaders’ World War II incarnation as well as Cap’s frequent partner, Falcon.

Coates will also remain on the new Black Panther ongoing series, which will bring T’Challa into outer space.
