In a day where there are so many great TV ads, you can likely guess we’re real excited to see a certain few. It is surprising how effective the TV spot for the upcoming Captain America: Civil War is in just 42 short seconds. Man oh man! Where to begin!? Let’s break it down.
The clip opens up with Captain America entering a bunker that seems to house Bucky in some sort of stasis machine. Whether this is Cap finding Bucky for the first time after the events of Winter Soldier or just him dropping in for a visit is unclear. Bucky doesn’t look entirely happy in the machine so our money’s on the former. It continues with a shot of Falcon perched on a building and similar footage we’ve seen before of a military force confronting Cap and Buck seemingly to take Barnes into custody.
The new footage is some of the most exciting we’ve seen so far. Tony Stark ripping open his watch that envelops his hand (almost fluidly) in Iron Man tech that’s very reminiscent of the comic book form of his Extremis armor. The watch armor covers Stark’s hand just in time to catch a bullet fired by Bucky directly in Tony’s face. The surprised look from Tony after this says it all and gives us a taste of why he may think Bucky needs to be brought in.
Black Widow watches over some explosions at an airfield which it’s now clear is Leipzig/Halle Airport in Germany. This brings us to the epic shot of both sides of this Civil War. On one side we’ve got Cap, Bucky, Scarlet Witch, Falcon, Hawkeye, and freakin’ Ant-Man for the first time in a trailer! The opposing side being Iron Man, War Machine, Black Panther, Vision, and a very concerned Black Widow.
The showdown we’ve seen in previous trailers is at the very same explosion-filled airport and the two deliberate shots of the concerned Black Widow have us especially excited about her arc in the movie. Does she switch sides? Is she a double agent? We can’t wait to find out.
