Capcom Impressions: STREET FIGHTER V, UMBRELLA CORPS, and RESIDENT EVIL 0

Capcom has remained a highly recognizable name in video games for over thirty years, and has brought players some of the most popular game franchises to date. At New York Comic Con this year, I got a chance to meet up with some of the folks at Capcom’s booth and preview their newest titles.

Street Fighter V

The newest, highly anticipated installment in Capcom’s world famous fighter series is still a few months away from its release–which made it the perfect thing to draw large crowds on the show floor. I got a chance to talk with Matt Dahlgren, Senior Product Marketing Manager from Capcom, and play him in a little bit of Street Fighter V while we chatted about the game. Matt played as Laura, the series’ newest fighter, who had just been announced the day before at their Street Fighter V panel. I decided to give Rasheed a try.

Street Fighter V has been designed to give a more unique feel to each fighter, and build them to specific play styles,” Matt explained as he beat me mercilessly. “This is to build Street Fighter V more in-line with eSports, allowing for individual skill and character capability to be factors in how a fight turns out.” Matt also used this time to introduce me to the new V-Gauge and V-Trigger systems in the game. Simply enough, the V-Gauge is a meter that builds over time as a character takes damage. it is meant to give a chance for the losing player to try and retake the fight. After filling the gauge, players can activate their V-Trigger to unleash a powerful attack against their opponent. I was able to use this technique to win one of my rounds against Matt, but ultimately was not victorious.

After our fight, Matt told me about the exciting news for their post-launch content and online play. ” Street Fighter V will be the first game we have designed to be played on dedicated servers that allow PS4 players to battle against PC players, and vice versa. It will also be the first Street Fighter title that will offer patches, new characters, and content all through digital download instead of through updated games like Super Street Fighter. Now, it won’t cost as much for players to be able to pick up new characters or rebalance their current fighters. Also, it will not force other players to have to relearn their favorite fighters due to those rebalances.”

Umbrella Corps.

For the first time on American shores, Capcom showed off their newest game under the Resident Evil trademark, Umbrella Corps. The game had a demo area set up that allowed two teams of three to take each other on head-to-head. I stepped in with two other players for a best-of-three match in the game’s “One Life Mode.” The game is a fast-paced, third-person shooter that expresses Capcom’s interested in getting involved in the eSports world outside of fighting games. The game is strictly a 3v3 multiplayer-only experience that will feature several different game modes for teams to battle each other in.

Teams enter the fray with two weapons, a grenade type, and the ability to use “The Brainer” as a melee attack. Capcom also offers an interesting twist on the Deathmatch game style by incorporating NPC zombies on the map. Players can kill the zombies for a small amount of points, or try to use them as a trap for the opposing team. The only catch is that zombies play by no one’s rules, so keeping them alive could possibly become a fatal mistake later in a match. Another game-changing feature allows players who have died to watch the rest of the match from an over-head view of the map. This allows for teams who have lost a player to maintain, or even gain, a strategic edge in the battle, and allow players who have died to still contribute to the team. The game felt smooth, and the animations looked beautiful, but it will still be a while before we see if Capcom has the ability to break into the competitive shooter market with Umbrella Corps.

Resident Evil 0 HD

Finally, the last unreleased game that Capcom had to on display at New York Comic Con was their HD remake of Resident Evil 0. After the successful launch of the HD remake for the original Resident Evil, fans have been clamoring to see more remakes of the original series. Capcom saw this as a perfect opportunity to bring the Gamecube-exclusive Resident Evil 0 to an audience that may never have gotten a chance to play it before.

I played the game once or twice when it first came out on Gambecube, and was quickly overcome by the nostalgia of the fixed-camera mainstay of the old Resident Evil installments. The HD update will not only include remastered graphics, but also an updated 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio that uses a smart pan feature for moving the player across the screen. The pans are very slight and fluid to keep them from feeling too jarring to a viewer. The game also features a more modern control scheme that players can choose to utilize if they are not interested in the classic feel of Resident Evil’s “tank control” layout. The game also boasts a “Wesker Mode”, which allows players who have beaten the main story to replay through it as a super-powered Albert Wesker. Resident Evil 0 HD should be released for download in early 2016. The game will also have a physical version available as part of Capcom’s Resident Evil Origins bundle, which includes the HD remake of the original Resident Evil as well.

Which of these Capcom games are you guys most looking forward to? Let us know in the comments below and be sure to check back with us for even more content from New York Comic Con.
