Putting popcorn in your mouth is exhausting. You have to grab it with your hand, put your hand to your mouth, and then….well, that’s it. That’s all you have to do actually. But still, who needs the aggravation? Not when you can make a totally needless and poorly functioning beer helmet-like popcorn dispenser.
We told you before about the person responsible for building the world’s worst machines, Simone Giertz, who has a knack for designing the truly terrible. Well it turns out we weren’t the only ones to notice her unique ability to construct crappy contraptions, because she has joined Adam Savage and Tested as its newest member. To celebrate, the two worked together to make an awful popcorn helmet feeder.
You can see the final product in the video up above, a true testament to stupid, but they also shared a longer video showing the process of designing and making the helmet, with the two collaborating via computer (Giertz lives in Sweden).
Even making something that isn’t intended to actually be helpful is a process unto itself, with the two discussing lasers, the Venturi principle, the merits of a self-contained popcorn maker versus a pure dispenser, vacuum molding, and everything else that goes into engineering a functioning machine–even if the function is dumb. Building something of this high quality to work poorly requires talent.
Giertz might make things designed to be dumb, but she’s a skilled engineer with a great creative mind. Teaming up with the equally creative Adam Savage can only lead to bigger, better, and even dumber devices. We can’t wait.
What’s your favorite terrible invention from Giertz? Tell us in the comments below.
