Bryan Fuller Reveals How HANNIBAL Would Have Done THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS

Saturday night, Hannibal wrapped up its third and final season on NBC. Attempts to find a new home for Hannibal on Amazon were unsuccessful in part because showrunner Bryan Fuller is now heading up the TV adaptation of American Gods on Starz. Hannibal himself, Mads Mikkelsen, is also poised for a potential villainous role in Doctor Strange and a confirmed part in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

But what if Hannibal had gone on to a fourth season? Fuller was never able to secure the rights to Thomas Harris’ The Silence of the Lambs novel or the Clarice Starling character. However, Fuller told CraveOnline several details about how he would have approached that storyline on Hannibal.

Regarding the casting of Clarice Starling, Fuller said “there’s a couple of ways to go. There’s the Ellen Page way, which I think would be fantastic and more kind of in line with the Clarice that we all know. But I know I would also like to explore who Clarice would be from a different racial background. There’s something about being poor and white in the South but there’s something else about being poor and black in the South, and I think it could be the necessary gateway into the character, to make Clarice as much our own signature character as we tried to make Will Graham.”

Fuller also noted that his former Pushing Daisies star, Lee Pace was his top choice to play Buffalo Bill.

“I would love to cast Lee Pace as Buffalo Bill,” said Fuller. “His first, most notable, award-winning career move was playing a transgendered person [in A Soldier’s Girl], and I think it would be fascinating to return him to that side of his acting skill.”

The complete interview at CraveOnline features more specifics from Fuller about which characters would be used and how he would have structured the story.

Fuller’s version of The Silence of the Lambs could eventually happen someday, if he’s able to secure the rights and reunite the cast of Hannibal. Who’s to say? Stranger things have happened.
