Bryan Fuller Offers Hope and Details to STAR TREK Fans

Last week, Star Trek fans were somewhat dismayed by Chris Pine‘s comments about the film franchise, namely his remark that Trek couldn’t be “cerebral” in 2016. We love an action-packed Star Trek story as much as anyone, but why can’t one be thought provoking, too? But there is hope on the horizon, however. Bryan Fuller is returning to the Star Trek franchise for the new original series at CBS All Access, and he dropped some very intriguing details at the Saturn Awards.

Collider caught up with Fuller at the event, and he was pretty forthcoming with previously undisclosed details. For starters, he confirmed that the new series will feature a serialized story across 13 episodes. That would be a very short season by Trek standards, but it’s more in line with modern television runs. “We have to tell stories differently than they’ve been told for fifty years,” said Fuller. He was also asked about including LGBT characters on the new show, and he replied, “Absolutely. I think the progressive audience that loves Star Trek will be happy that we’re continuing that tradition.”

Fuller noted that casting has begun, sets are under construction, and filming is scheduled to begin this fall. He also revealed that more details are likely to be announced at San Diego Comic-Con, so save us a spot in line for that panel! Fuller’s Star Trek series is expected to debut in early 2017 on CBS All Access.
