Brush Up on Your Christmas Legends with the History of KRAMPUS

You better watch out! Krampus, the Christmas demon, is coming to town…

It’s always fun for me to enjoy alternative holiday films during the month of December. Sure, It’s A Wonderful Life and The Grinch are Yuletide staples, but I’m usually more inclined to break out Bob Clark’s Black Christmas or Richard Donner’s Scrooged to go along with my hot cocoa and sugar cookies.

While the legend of Krampus is a bit more widespread around the world, it’s lesser known here in the US. This video explains the myth of Krampus with a little help from the guys at The League, Family Guy, and other pop culture references. This is, of course, as the new Christmas horror film of the same name prepares to hit theaters just in time for the holidays.

While it may seem a bit strange to feature a horror movie at Christmas, telling scary stories on Christmas Eve is a tradition that dates back many years, long before Charles Dickens wrote A Christmas Carol, which, if you think about it, is a pretty terrifying ghost story. So it would make sense for more spooky stuff in the spirit of Gremlins and Krampus to make its way back to film and television. A girl can dream, anyway…

Krampus, written and directed by Michael Dougherty (Trick ‘R Treat), stars Adam Scott, Toni Collette, Allison Tolman, and David Koechner, and hits theaters December 4.
