Bruce Campbell and Lucy Lawless Review Classic Horror Movie Deaths

Nearly every week on Ash vs. Evil Dead, Bruce Campbell and Lucy Lawless are practically baptized in fake blood and other disgusting bodily fluids. Campbell and Lawless have been doing genre movies and TV shows for a long time, so they have a special appreciation for the finer points of great horror moments captured on film.

Wired recently brought Lawless and Campbell together to watch clips of some of the death scenes in classic horror films for their reactions and their perspectives. For Alien, the duo found John Hurt’s famous chestbuster sequence to be more humorous than anything else, although they acknowledged its place in cinema history. As for Halloween, Campbell couldn’t resist speculating about the expressions on Nick Castle’s face under the emotionless mask of Michael Myers. Both of them were initially bored by Jason X, but they found the “frozen face” demise to be a unique touch.

Evil Dead II was a little closer to home for Campbell, since it was one of his earliest movie roles. The scene in question featured Sarah Berry’s Annie Knowby as she was bathed in the blood of Jake (Dan Hicks). Campbell noted that Jake must have had more blood “than a rhinoceros.” Campbell and Lawless were impressed by the skin-ripping demise from the first Hellraiser. They also enjoyed Johnny Depp’s death in A Nightmare on Elm Street.

Surprisingly, it was the gruesome dismemberment of the crew and guests of Ghost Ship that won the highest praise from Lawless and Campbell, although they doubted that the rest of the film lived up to that opening scene. It has to be said that Campbell and Lawless continue to have great chemistry with each other, and we’d love to see a web series where they continue to watch horror movies together. We’d also suggest that Fede Alvarez‘s 2013 remake of Evil Dead be on the slate for their next reaction video. That seems perfect for this.
