Brie Larson in for KONG: SKULL ISLAND (and Russell Crowe Maybe, Too!)

It looks like our return to the world of King Kong will have Trainwreck (and Community, and Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, and 21 Jump Street, and Short Term 12, and Kroll Show, and a literal ton of really fantastic other films and TV series) star Brie Larson at the center of it all. That’s right, Kong: Skull Island has confirmed the actress as their female lead, joining the Internet’s favorite human Tom Hiddleston in the film.

Set to be released by Universal Pictures on March 10, 2017 in both regular and IMAX 3D formats (because if you’re going to see King Kong go to town, it might as well be in the biggest, most immersive format possible, right?), the Legendary Pictures look at the giant gorilla that has terrified and excited generations of moviegoers will be an origins story for the mega-beast. And it also looks like—pending the next draft of the script—that Russell Crowe will board the production as well, following a scheduling conflict loss of both J.K. Simmons and Michael Keaton several weeks ago.

It’s an exciting entry point into the world of King Kong, since the bits on Skull Island were, perhaps, the most intriguing of the story. Peter Jackson won’t be directing this iteration, though: up for the job this go-around is Jordan Vogt-Roberts, helmer of The Kings of Summer, several episodes of the delightful You’re The Worst (on FXX), and Nick Offerman: American Ham.
