BRITANNIA: WE WHO ARE ABOUT TO DIE Brings Us Back to a Bloody Ancient Rome (Preview)

This April, Valiant Comics is taking us back to their dark vision of Rome with a brand new Britannia series.  The original Britannia creative team, consisting of writer Peter Milligan and artist Juan José Ryp, are back on board to bring us Britannia: We Who Are About to Die. We absolutely loved the first series, so we’ve been seriously hyped for another Antonius Axia adventure.

Milligan, Ryp, and colorist Jordie Bellaire really knocked it our of the park with the Britannia series. The story of Rome’s first detective was filled with violence, politics, and the dark magic swirling beneath the ancient world. It was a blast and we were thrilled when, earlier this year, Valiant announced they had more in store for Antonius Axia.

Joined this time around by Frankie D’Armata as their new colorist, Milligan and Ryp are focusing on the Coliseum in Britannia: We Who Are About to Die. There’s a kickass lady gladiator (who looks to be Valiant’s next breakout character) and a curse that is tearing the citizens of Rome apart. Literally. If you read this first Britannia, you know that blood and guts are a big part of the package.

Ryp is a visceral, caustic artist who does intensity and violence better than anybody. His style is perfect for this horror mystery. D’Armata has some very, very big shoes to fill, but it’s pretty clear from these pages that he is more than up to the task. The soft browns and hard reds dominate the panels, giving overall sense of earth and death.

We’re very excited to bring you the first lettered preview of Britannia: We Who Are About to Die, which you can scope out below. The first issue hits stands April 26th and our souls are ready for it. We highly recommend you pick up the first Britannia trade while you wait for Britannia: We Who Are About to Die, it was easily one of 2016’s best new series.
