Book Review: The Art of Eating through the Zombie Apocalypse by Lauren Wilson

Once civilization collapses, you will probably never eat another glazed donut.

Sadder words were never written. I’m a true believer that the zombie apocalypse is real and coming for us, it’s just a matter of time. Luckily Lauren Wilson’s The Art of Eating through the Zombie Apocalypse gives hope for sustaining yourself while you’re on the run during the zpoc.

The book’s beautiful illustrations by Kristian Bauthus makes the ZA seem almost bucolic but don’t be fooled, we all must learn how to hunt, forage and survive even if it means living off the (waste)land of imperishable foods from the abandoned convenience store. Luckily, author Lauren Wilson gives whimsical insight on how to scavenge, what to pack, and how to make do with minimal supplies. Just when I start to worry that I won’t know how to properly set up my filtration teepee, the recipes that suck me in. Despite the onslaught of walkers and certain death, cooking has always been my lone survival skill and something I’m certain I can manage even with zombies on my tail.

The Art of Eating through the Zombie Apocalypse

Recipes like Overnight of the Living Dead French Toast sound positively scrumptious even when not facing total annihilation. Note to self: keep challah on hand when the end is nigh. On the other hand, the End Times Musubi recipe suggests using the Spam tin itself as a mold, thereby requiring no extra equipment for preparation. A helpful tip, seeing as how it’s the end of the world and all.

It’s during desperate times that we must look to the book’s suggested recipes for Squirrel Jerky and Meal Worm Fried Rice. It is also at that time that I’ll definitely just give up and let the zombies take me instead.

The Art of Eating through the Zombie Apocalypse is entertaining and informative, a definite must for any zombie fan. I recommend reading it now so you can start practicing the recipe for Twinkie Trifle. “Zombie Twinkies” seems like an oxymoron since both seem to have an endless afterlife but who knows, the dish could save your life when the zombie apocalypse comes.
