Blink 182 Releases First Song in Five Years, “Bored to Death”

And it’s a long way back from seventeen
The whispers turn into a scream
And I—I’m not coming home

After five years of silence, Blink 182 has come back home to the music world. The band has released their first new music since their 2011 album Neighbors. “Bored to Death,” the first glimpse of their upcoming album California, actually has us feeling like it wouldn’t be that far a trip back to being 17, because this song sounds so much like the classic Blink 182 that many of us spent our teen years with.

The band released a lyric video for the song, which you can check out up above. While they are still a trio, longtime member Tom DeLonge is no longer with the group; nowadays, the third member joining original bandmates Mark Hoppus and Travis Barker is Matt Skiba, who many of you know from Alkaline Trio. (Maybe playing in a three-piece ensemble is a very specific skill?)

Last month, we told you how Barker said this was the band’s “best work in a decade,” but since this is only the second album since 2003’s self-titled Blink-182, that might mean very little… or it might mean a lot. Either way, we’re eager to hear the whole album after this pretty solid debut.

You can currently pre-order California from their website, and it will be available everywhere this summer on July 1st.

So after five years, did this first foray from the band back into the pop-punk realm have you rocking out, or where you bored to death? Tell us what you thought of the song right here in the comments section below. And check out Whitney Moore’s interview with Tom DeLonge from last year’s San Diego Comic Con.
