BLADE RUNNER Sequel Gets a Director, Harrison Ford Set to Return

It’s already been quite a year for long dormant, beloved genre properties making a comeback decades after the fact. We’ve got Han, Luke and Leia coming back for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Agent Cooper returning in an all new Twin Peaks, Arnold back as the T-800, and this week we learned that Ripley would return for Alien 5, some 20 years after the last installment.

Well, get ready to add Blade Runner to that list, because Harrison Ford is in talks to reprise his role as Rick Deckard in a sequel to the classic 1982 film. Prisoners director Denis Villeneuve will helm the film for Alcon Entertainment. In the original, Ford played a man whose task it was to hunt down rogue machines who look just like human called replicants.

Blade Runner 2 (or whatever it ends up being called) is set to start principal photography in summer of 2016. The co-writer of the original film, Hampton Fancher, and Michael Green have written the sequel’s screenplay based on an idea by Fancher and the director of the original movie, Ridley Scott, who chose not to return to the director’s chair this time. The story for the sequel is said to take place several decades after the end of the original film, which I guess would place it around 2050 or so, since the original movie took place in 2019. Sadly, it doesn’t look likely that there will be fully functional replicants walking around in four years time, or any off-world colonies, which is kind of a major bummer.

Not happy.  The original was a masterpiece that doesn’t want or need a sequel.  Make as many “in-world” movies as you want and even reference events from the original – but we don’t need to see an elderly Deckard running around saying “I’m too old for this shit” in exactly the same way we didn’t need it for Indiana Jones.  We also don’t need new Alien movies or a Ghostbusters reboot ffs.

MAKE NEW MOVIES THAT ARE GREAT!

    • The original Blade Runner was first released in 1978 and not 1982. Please get your facts right. I am a true blue Blade Runner fan. And yes, any attempt for a sequel will only spoil the original.

    Horrible idea.

About time although I can’t see where they’ll go with it. Be good to see how their vision of the future reflects on the original.

This is still my #1 favorite movie of all time so hopefully the sequel does it justice and follows the vision that Phillip K. Dick attempted to create all those years ago! Glad they’re bringing Harrison Ford back, so long as it’s not like his role in the last Indiana Jones film!

    I think you meant principal photography… 😉
