The King Comes Under Fire in New BLACK PANTHER Trailer

During the college football championship game, Marvel Studios dropped a new trailer for its upcoming Black Panther movie. Appropriately enough, it followed a halftime performance by Kendrick Lamar, who just so happens to be curating Black Panther: The Album. As seen in some of the previous trailers, the video takes the time to reestablish Chadwick Boseman‘s T’Challa/Black Panther as the new king of Wakanda, the most advanced nation on Earth. But the king’s enemies have united against him and they may actually be able to seize control of his country.

Within this story, T’Challa has two primary adversaries: Michael B. Jordan‘s Erik “Killmonger” Stevens and Andy Serkis‘ Ulysses Klaue. As you may recall, Klaue was briefly introduced in Avengers: Age of Ultron, but he seems to be much more formidable in this footage, as he carries a vendetta against Wakanda while trying to claim its riches. Klaue’s unlikely ally, Killmonger (in his own Black Panther suit!), is an even greater threat because he wants Wakanda’s throne for himself—and to end T’Challa’s life.

Of course, T’Challa has allies of his own; sister Shuri (Letitia Wright) is basically his Q, while Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o) and Okoye (Danai Gurira) are special forces fighters from the Dora Milaje. Even Martin Freeman‘s Everett K. Ross is more or less aligned with T’Challa, although it remains to be seen where he fits into Black Panther’s ultimate plans.

Black Panther will be released in theaters on Friday, February 16. Advance tickets are on sale now.
