Last year, Captain America: Civil War successfully introduced fans to the new Spider-Man and the first ever live-action take on Black Panther. While Spider-Man: Homecoming brought the MCU’s stakes down to Earth, Black Panther will apparently be shooting for a more epic sense of scale. Ahead of next week’s San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel has dropped a massive Black Panther photo preview and details that may show the film to be “a cross between James Bond and The Godfather.”

Entertainment Weekly has revealed its new Black Panther cover story, which offers the best look yet at Chadwick Boseman’s title character, as well as his friends, enemies, and even his former lover. In a departure from the comics, Lupita Nyong’o’s Nakia will be portrayed as both Black Panther’s bodyguard within the Dora Milaje (think of them as the all-female Wakandan secret service) and someone who previously had a relationship with Boseman’s T’Challa. In the comics, Nakia’s feelings for T’Challa were unrequited and she took several dark turns. EW also has the best pictures yet of the other women in T’Challa’s life: Letitia Wright as his younger sister, Shuri; Angela Bassett as his mother, Ramonda; and Danai Gurira as the head of the Dora Milaje, Okoye.

The report also sheds some light on the loyalties of Michael B. Jordan’s Eric Killmonger, one of the primary antagonists in the film. The The Godfather analogy comes into play here, because he’s sided with an outsider Ulysses Klaue (Andy Serkis) over the royal family. But don’t make any Fredo jokes–Killmonger is one of the few foes that Black Panther hasn’t always been able to beat in the comics, as his intellect and his strength rival T’Challa’s.

“I think Killmonger has his own opinion on how Wakanda has been run and should run, and what I think Michael brings to the table is sort of a charming antagonist, who doesn’t agree with how T’Challa is running things, frankly,” explains executive producer Nate Moore. “I think that puts T’Challa in a difficult situation. Killmonger is a voice of a different side of Wakanda.”

The pictures of the main cast are also very striking, including the group image below, with Forest Whitaker, Daniel Kaluuya, Jordan, Nyong’o, Boseman, Bassett, Gurira, and Wright. This feature is part of EW‘s Comic-Con preview issue, and there will probably be more information and pictures coming later this week and early next week.

Black Panther will be released in theaters on Friday, February 16, 2018.
