Visit the World of Wakanda in New BLACK PANTHER Featurette

Marvel fans may have noticed the trailers for Black Panther make it look like it’s taking place in the future. That’s because in Wakanda, the future is now. As envisioned by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby several decades ago, Wakanda is one of the most technologically advanced nations in the Marvel Universe. Next month, director Ryan Coogler will offer a more intimate exploration of that nation within Black Panther‘s first ever solo film. And in a new video from Marvel, the spotlight is falling upon Wakanda itself.

As noted in the preview clips above, Wakanda isn’t simply a hidden nation as it was in the comics. The MCU version of Wakanda has carefully constructed lies and illusions that were designed to make them seem much less powerful to the rest of the world. Ever since it was founded, Wakanda has never been conquered by outside forces, and only a handful of people, like Ulysses Klaue (Andy Serkis), have figured out the secret of Wakanda’s wealth and technology: vibranium, a rare metal that can only be found within Wakanda’s borders.

Captain America: Civil War gave us our first glimpse of vibranium’s true potential with Black Panther’s costume, but it can do so much more. The scientists in Wakanda have used their knowledge of vibranium to construct a futuristic utopia. But even the most advanced nation is vulnerable to internal strife, and Black Panther’s enemies have plans to seize Wakanda and its vibranium for themselves.

Black Panther will roar into theaters on Friday, February 16.
