Next month, director Ryan Coogler is bringing Black Panther to the big screen, and with his Creed star Michael B. Jordan on board as the film’s lead villain to boot. Now, Coogler’s Creed co-writer, Aaron Covington, is also getting a chance to leave his mark on Black Panther with a two-issue arc on the ComiXology original series, Black Panther: Long Live the King.
Via The Hollywood Reporter, Covington will be joined by artist Mario DelPennio as they tell a story that flashes back to T’Challa’s youth before he was burdened by the pressures of Wakanda’s crown. In the present, T’Challa suits up as Black Panther and takes on the White Gorilla clan, one of the many groups that wants to overthrow T’Challa in the wake of Wakanda’s recent political strife.
The preview also implies that this attack was part of a broader plan to strike at Wakanda and its king. These pages also suggest there some of T’Challa’s followers resent his reliance on his sister, Shuri.
You can read the preview pages here, and Black Panther: Long Live the King #3 will be available on ComiXology starting on Wednesday, January 10. The fourth issue will be released two weeks later on Wednesday, January 24. For the fifth and sixth issues of this miniseries, the original creative team, Nnedi Okorafor and Andre Lima Araujo, will return to close out their story.
