BLACK MIRROR Will Be Back, Maybe as a Netflix Original

Good news for people who tore through Charlie Brooker’s dystopian near-future, beware-of-technology television series Black Mirror: the show WILL be coming back…the only question being: where? All current episodes of the series were made for Britain’s Channel 4, but now it looks as though Brooker is considering making new episodes exclusively for Netflix.

When the six episodes comprising the series hit US Netflix late in 2014, word of mouth made it an immediate must-watch. I myself had to limit my watching to one episode at a time because of how devastating each one was — and not in a bad way at all. But while part of Black Mirror‘s power is its inherent Britishness, there’s no denying the staggering popularity of the project over here, and with Netflix making some truly fantastic original programming, like Daredevil, The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, and Orange is the New Black to name but a few, Brooker likely can’t help but be wooed by the new content-creating and distributing powerhouse.

It’s clear that American audiences already love the WTF-ness of the show’s cautionary tales about modern conveniences, in particular social media. The title of the series refers to what happens when the screens we look at on our personal electronic devices (like phones, televisions, computers, etc) turn of — all you’re left with is a dark, reflective surface to see nothing but yourself (a black mirror, if you will). Funny and also very fitting that it should come to Netflix, the next step in direct-to-viewer media.

The most recent episode to air in the UK is the 75-minute special “White Christmas” which came out in December and starred Jon Hamm, Rafe Spall, Oona Chaplin, and Natalia Tena. It has yet to make it to Netflix. However, one can only assume it’ll be there shortly, especially if Brooker does indeed take the show’s production there.

Are you excited for more Black Mirror? Do you think the show will be hurt or hindered by a movie of production to Netflix instead of Channel 4? Let us know below, folks.
