BLACK LIGHTNING Trailer Teases the Origin of The CW’s Newest Superhero

Forty years ago, Black Lightning became DC Comics’ first black superhero to headline his own comic book series. Next year, Black Lightning is bringing the electricity to The CW as the star of the network’s fifth DC superhero series. And while Black Lightning appears to be set apart from the Arrowverse, Cress Williams‘ Jefferson Pierce is ready to bring his own brand of justice to television. A newly released trailer for the series teases Black Lightning’s origin as Jefferson works on his costume, while hinting at his return from retirement to once again protect his city and serve as an inspiration to its people.

Black Lightning was created by Tony Isabella and artist Trevor Von Eeden, and the new series seems to be keeping a lot of the elements from his early comic book days. Once again, Jefferson will use his abilities to control electricity to take on the One Hundred, a powerful gang that is led by his nemesis, Tobias Whale (Marvin “Krondon” Jones III). When he isn’t fighting bad guys, Jefferson is the principal of a local high school where he attempts to guide and protect his students.

The biggest change in the new TV series is that it is essentially starting in the middle of Jefferson’s story, years after his initial stint as Black Lightning. Jefferson retired from the role in part to focus on his family, but his two daughters, Jennifer (China Anne McClain) and Anissa Pierce (Nafessa Williams) are now old enough to lead their own lives. And if this series follows its comic book roots, then both Anissa and Jennifer may inherit their father’s powers and his quest.

The CW will debut the first episode of Black Lightning on Tuesday, January 16, 2018.
