I like superpowers that are odd, but understandable. Take the ability to generate vocal screeches so powerful that their sound alone can incapacitate enemies and destroy objects. Heroes like Black Bolt, Black Canary, and Banshee are the most famous amplifiers, though Marvel’s Black Bolt — king of the Inhumans — is arguably the most powerful. And he doesn’t just break glass or rupture eardrums, no, he shatters mountains with a word.
In my latest Because Science, I’m taking a look at what it would take to replicate some of the sonorous feats Black Bolt is famous for. Specifically, what would it take to crack a mountain with sound alone? Would it even still be sound at that point?
Once we know the kind of decibels we’re dealing with, we can figure out the energies involved. It would take Blackagar Boltagon (yes, I know) less than a second to say one word, meaning that we would only be getting a tease of his true power. What if he kept talking?
