BIRDMAN Spoof Has Carroll Spinney Followed by Big Bird

One of the big nominees at this weekend’s Academy Awards is Alejandro G. Inarritu’s Birdman, the story of a washed-up former superhero movie icon trying to make some art he can believe in with a play in which he, writes, produces and stars. It’s got most of the big categories covered, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor for Michael Keaton, Best Screenplay, and Best Supportings for Emma Stone and Edward Norton. It’s a good movie, I don’t think there’s any denying that, BUT, how much better would the movie be if it were about the man behind one of the most beloved birds in pop cultural history? I’m speaking, of course, of Big Bird from Sesame Street and the puppeteer and perform who’s given him a voice for over 45 years, Carroll Spinney.

In this delightful parody of the shot-to-look-like-one-take Academy darling, Spinney listens to his inner Big Bird monologue, moves things around telekinetically, walks around tiny hallways, and gets followed down the street by the character himself. It’s the most perfect ninety seconds in internet history (a gross overstatement used for the purposes of hype and hyperbole). Enjoy!

Sesame Street‘s parody videos are always on pointe, but “Bigbirdman: or the Unexpected Virtue of Orange Pants” might be their crowning achievement. And a lot of what the inner Bird says is true; how many ways CAN we learn the alphabet? Lots, apparently. And they sure sent Big Bird all over the world there for a while, didn’t they?

Should this video win an Academy Award on Sunday even though there’s no physical way for that to happen? Let us know in the comments below!
