Billy Joel, JK Simmons, and Jimmy Fallon Sang an Impromptu ‘For The Longest Time’

I’ll bet almost every one of you knows what song you’d want to sing if you were given the chance to jam with Billy Joel and his band. On Thursday night, the world learned which number J.K. Simmons would choose: “For The Longest Time.” Even better for all of us, cameras were rolling when this impromptu sing-along came to life.

On The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, the beloved musician and Oscar-winning actor came together to help shoot some promos for local stations with Fallon, at which point Simmons suggested they sing Joel’s doo-wop song between takes. Because they are probably used to everyone in the universe wanting to sing a song with Billy Joel, the Long Island legend’s band didn’t miss a beat, hopping right into the song upon request.

There’s a lot going on here to like, from Simmons’ deep bass voice to the idea of super famous people behaving exactly the way the rest of us do when we’ve had a couple drinks with our friends, to Billy Joel actually conducting the song so the group could get it as perfect as possible. It’s not easy to harmonize a song like “For the Longest Time” in such a setting, but by by the end of the video, it sounds pretty good. I also appreciate how much Fallon, who goofs around with super famous people all the time, genuinely seems to love what is happening.

Fortunately for everyone involved, it seems like they managed to do the song at J.K. Simmons’ tempo. (Things could have gone from very sweet to very ugly real fast.)

So what song would you want to sing with Billy Joel? I’m a weirdo who’d ask to sing “The Downeaster ‘Alexa.’” Tell us yours in the comments below.
