Itâs widely believed that a third Ghostbusters movie never happened because Bill Murray was reluctant to reprise his role as Peter Venkman from the first two films. However, it was recently confirmed that Murray shot a cameo appearance in the upcoming reboot Ghostbusters movie directed by Paul Feig.
âYou know, they were incredibly nice to ask me, and I really enjoyed being there,â said Murray during a recent interview with Vulture. âThey have such a jolly group, and they are going to have great success with this project. I didnât want to overshadow [them] or anything, and I feel really good about it.â
Murrayâs last experience with the Ghostbusters franchise was providing his voice alongside most of the original cast for Ghostbusters: The Video Game, which was released in 2009. In the new interview, Murray acknowledged that he wasnât initially sure if he wanted to revisit the franchise in any form.
âI thought about it for a very long time,â explained Murray. âLike, many, many months. No, thatâs not right. I was seriously thinking about this for years, really⦠It kept eating at me, and I really respect those girls. And then I started to feel like if I didnât do this movie, maybe somebody would write a bad review or something, thinking there was some sort of disapproval [on my part].â
Murrayâs part in the reboot is rumored to be a ghost debunker who is out to prove that the new Ghostbusters are frauds. If thatâs true, his new character sounds more like William Athertonâs Walter Peck than Peter Venkman. Murrayâs former Ghostbusters costar, Dan Aykroyd will also have a cameo in the new film.
The Ghostbusters reboot will haunt movie theaters on July 15, 2016.
