Bethesda Opens New Studio in Montreal

Bethesda Game Studios has announced the opening of a brand new office in Canada. The newly minted Bethesda Montreal has already recruited 40 core developers that span from console to mobile development. This team will be headed by Yves Lachance, who previously worked on Fallout Shelter.

Here’s what Game Director and Executive producer of Bethesda Games Studios, Todd Howard, had to say:

“We’ve worked with some very talented developers in Montreal for a long time, and decided it was time to open a studio there,” Howard states. “It’s exciting to think about the new games we’ll be building together.”

They aren’t even done hiring yet– they also announced that positions still need to be filled in both the Maryland and Montreal location. This is huge. It’ll be interesting to see what new IPs will come of this expansion, or whether the development cycles for the current ongoing series will receive increased production speeds. I think it’s safe to credit this new venture partially to the recent success of Fallout 4.

I also found it intriguing that mobile development was mentioned. We all know how incredibly successful Fallout Shelter has been, so I wonder what other sort of experiences the team is planning on bringing to the mobile platform. I also doubt that the success of Shelter can be replicated, considering Shelter received a lot of attention because of the Fallout 4 hype. That’s not to say the game isn’t excellent, but the mobile space can certainly be fickle. This could also mean that we will see more mobile tie-ins with their major AAA releases.

Either way, more developers working at Bethesda means that we’ll hopefully be seeing more games from them, at a more frequent rate.

What do you guys think about this expansion? Does this make you excited for what’s to come from Bethesda in the future? Let us know in the comments below.
