BERSERK Returns to Anime in 2016!

Young Animal, the magazine that publishes the manga Berserk, will formally announce the series’ return to anime in Friday’s issue (December 25). NBC Universal will be revealing the first promotional video for the anime next week at Comiket (December 29-31) in Japan. The anime’s website also released this teaser image:

Berserk, created by Kentaro Miura, made its debut in 1990. After publishing three volumes, the manga became serialized by Young Animal in 1992. The manga was adapted into an anime series, airing from 1997-1998. Set in a dark fantasy world, Berserk tells the story of Guts, a lone warrior who is taken in by the mercenary group, “Band of the Hawk.” After the group is betrayed by their leader, Griffith, Guts’ mission in life turns to one of vengeance.

According to a report in Anime News Network, the new Berserk will focus on Guts’ “Black Swordman” guise, which was detailed mostly in the manga, and only briefly touched upon in the ’90s series.

Along with the new project (no word if it’s a series or movie), the original anime will also be receiving a re-release on Blu-Ray. The manga itself will be going on hiatus, with the next chapter not being released until next summer. Upon its return, Berserk will cease monthly publication and be produced on an irregular basis.
