Benedict Cumberbatch’s HAMLET Trailer Teases its Cinematic Release

If the universe plans on providing us more and more Shakespeare productions starring some of the best actors working today, we’re going to get along just fine with the cosmos. The latest Shakespeare play set to hit the big screen is a filmed version of the Hamlet stage production currently running in the U.K. with Benedict Cumberbatch in the title role and the amazing Ciaran Hinds as his murderous uncle, Claudius. And now it looks like it’s heading to stateside movie theaters.

This Hamlet has been running at the National Theater in London since August, and with its run set to conclude at the end of October, a special “limited engagement” airing in U.S. movie theaters will run from October 15th to the 22nd.

Filmed plays can be tricky to make look good, but based on this trailer—with Cumberbatch giving the “What a piece of work is a man” monologue—it is obvious the creators took the transformation seriously and had a cinematic audience in mind. It looks dark and brooding, with the spectral element apparently being a large influence.

You can visit the National Theater website to find where and when it will be playing.

Between this and the Michael Fassbender/Marion Cotillard Macbeth (whose trailer already has us freaking out with excitement) set to hit the screen on December 4th, it is a great time for both Shakespeare and film lovers everywhere.

What other modern actors would you like to see lead a new Shakespeare movie? Give us your dream actor and the dream role you have in mind in the comments below.
