Ben Affleck Talks the Status of The BATMAN Solo Film

Ben Affleck is pulling double duty on Justice League. He’s donning the cowl once again as Batman/Bruce Wayne, and he’s serving as executive producer on the film. He’s doing the latter in order to be looped in creatively because he’ll be taking the director’s chair for an as yet untitled Batman solo film. He’s sharing writing duties on said film with Geoff Johns, DC Comics’ Chief Creative Officer who was recently named co-head of DC Films . Nerdist was recently part of a small group of journalists visiting the set of Justice League, and Affleck gave an update on the Batman film in between takes.

He said he’s an executive producer on Justice League since he’s now connected to the bigger DC movie universe on the storytelling side. “There’s some cross-pollination of story and characters and I don’t want to give any of that stuff away, but it basically means it’s possible that there might be some things that happen in my Batman that are affected by [this movie],” Affleck explained. “Here we are on the roof of the police station in Gotham City, so there’s an example of something that might also potentially exist in my story. It’s a creative way that DC came up with, both being a filmmaker-driven company and also making sure the right hand knows what the left hand is doing.”

With his costumed fellow League members, Commissioner Gordon, and the Bat-Signal in the background, Affleck explained that Warner Bros. and DC probably have a date in mind for release, but he might not be ready. “I think they have a date for it–honestly, though, I don’t know that I would necessarily be able to make that date because I don’t have a script that’s ready yet,” Affleck revealed. “My timetable is just that I’m not going to make a movie until there’s a script that I think is good because I’ve been on the end of things when you make a movie with a script that’s not good and it doesn’t pan out.”

Affleck added he does have a script. “We’re still working on it, and I’m not happy enough with it yet to actually go out there and make a Batman movie, for which I have the highest of standards,” he explained. “It’s something that would have to pass a very high bar for me.”
