Judging from the hypnotic melody of “Party Line,” the first single off Girls In Peacetime Want To Dance, Belle And Sebastian were all about truth in advertising when they came up with the name for their ninth studio album. Trading the mellow mope of indie pop for the head-bobbing beats of ABBA-esque disco, Stuart Murdoch & Co. appear to be tired of writing songs about heartbreak. Instead, they just wanna dance!

Reminiscent of “1901”-era Phoenix or a more mid-tempo Daft Punk, “Party Line” is smooth, suave and all about swag, which is something not often associated with Murdoch’s breathy vocals. However, on this new single, the famed Scottish frontman exhibits a type of oral confidence fans haven’t heard before. Like, instead of running for the tissues after you hear “Party Line,” you’ll be rushing towards the dance floor.

If this song is any indication of what listeners can expect on the band’s upcoming album, out Jan. 19/20 on Matador Records, Belle And Sebastian might just be your new soundtrack for swank soirees as opposed to, you know, overwhelming sadness.

Produced by Ben H. Allen (Animal Collective, Gnarls Barkley), the album will be available on CD, double LP and a 4-disc boxset, which includes bonus tracks, extended mixes and more.
