Behold, a Guy Riding a Unicycle Across The Tops Of Beer Bottles

That right there is a guy riding his unicycle across the top of a line of beer bottles. He — Lutz Eichholz, in case you need to know his name for some reason — made it across 8.93 meters of bottles, a new world record. Yes, there’s a record for that. Eichholz held the previous record (set on an Italian TV show called Lo Show Dei Record), but I guess he felt that there must be some young whippersnapper just around the corner itching to take on the challenge, and he needed to up his game. Or he just likes to ride his unicycle across the tops of beer bottles.

Unicycles confound me a little. They seem really hard to ride, but they also seem designed specifically to grab attention. I see a guy out on his unicycle in my neighborhood sometimes, and he clearly wants people to stare at him and maybe even applaud him for his unicycling abilities. “Look at me!,” I imagine him saying. “I’m riding a comical one-wheeled device! I’m unusual that way!” Good for you, buddy. And sorry that they don’t make 1950s TV variety shows anymore so you don’t have a shot at fame and… oh, right, America’s Got Talent. Carry on.

But wait: Eichholz IS getting fame, and maybe fortune. Check out his Extreme Unicycling video — he has sponsors (Adidas!) and everything:

How very balanced of him.

My boyfriend rides his unicycle around our neighbourhood occcasionally, to the delight of both senior citizens and small children. He’s an avid cyclist and enjoys the unique challenge of unicycling – balancing on top of a giant wheel, he says, is a pretty fun thing to do of an afternoon, from a “really cool things you can do with your body” point of view. It’s no sillier than skateboarding or those two-wheeled scooter things – but don’t get me wrong, it is silly. But that’s part of why it’s fun!

    That’s awesome 🙂 world records… am I right?

  3. Jeremy says:

There was a teacher back at college who rode a unicycle to school every day. Every. Day.

And it’s easy to make fun of people for doing weird looking things, but frankly it takes balls (or ovaries, whatevs) to go for it, so more power to ’em I think.
